Bhubaneswar:25/1/25: The Health and Family Welfare Department observed the National Girl Child Day in the Combined Health Directorate conference hall today to address gender-biased sex selection and endorse equal opportunities for girls.

The programme marked the conclusion of National Girl Child Week (January 18-24), which saw various activities across the state, including panel discussions on Doordarshan Kendra, felicitation of districts and blocks maintaining a balanced Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB), and recognition of girl achievers. Competitions such as painting, drawing, and debates were also conducted at schools and colleges.

A drawing and debate competition was organized at Unit 2 Girls High School, where President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu was once a student. Additionally, an Art and Painting Workshop was held at Dhauli College of Art & Craft, showcasing the artistic talents of college students.

Special Secretary (Public Health) Dr. Jitendra Mohan Bebortha emphasized the importance of recognizing and encouraging the contributions of women to inspire younger generations. Director of Family Welfare Dr. Sanjukta Sahoo presented district-wise sex ratio data and urged implementing corrective measures, such as decoy operations and informer incentive schemes. She highlighted the government’s commitment to initiatives like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”, aimed at transforming societal attitudes toward the girl child.

The event witnessed the presence of several dignitaries from the Health Directorates, including Dr. Satyabrata Chhotray, Dr. Muralidhar Padhi, Dr. Prativa Pradhan, Dr. Tapas Patra, Dr. Srabani Das, and Mr. Ritesh Sisu.

The program concluded with an oath-taking ceremony, where participants pledged to combat gender-based discrimination, making the occasion both impactful and inspiring.
