AIIMS Bhubaneswar organises AIIMS-PHYSIOMEET Workshop to form research consortiums between PMSSY institutes

Bhubaneswar, 13/02/2024: The scope of Physiology in managing lifestyle disorders and the creation of multi-centric collaborative research programs to address local and global health challenges is the need of the hour. Emerging issues in Physiology education and research, aspects related to the medical curriculum in physiology has been a key discussion point globally, stress experts attending the AIIMS-PHYSIOMEET Workshop organised by the department of Physiology AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

A pioneering initiative aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing research in Physiology education across the country, the two days workshop witnessed active participation from representatives of 17 AIIMS from different parts of India.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. Ramji Singh, a distinguished physiologist and Executive Director of AIIMS Kalyani, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr. G K Pal, Executive Director, AIIMS Patna Dr.Madhabananda Kar, Executive Director, AIIMS Jodhpur, Dr. P R Mohapatra, DEAN and Dr.D K Parida, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Pranati Nanda, HOD, Department of Physiology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Over 40 distinguished physiologists from various AIIMS participated in the event.

The workshop featured a panel discussion on emerging issues in physiology education and research, presided over by Dr. Ashutosh Biswas. Dr Biswas, emphasized the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in advancing Physiology Education & Research, citing the department’s numerous research programs initiated under his leadership. Dr Kalpana Barhwal, Additional Professor and Organizing Secretary of the event, highlighted that the workshop was the first of its kind, creating a platform for all Physiology faculty of AIIMS to discuss academic synergy and form research consortiums between PMSSY institutes.

The closing ceremony had the honour of hosting Dr. Rajeev Varshney, Director of the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), DRDO, as the Chief Guest. Important topics discussed included the role of artificial intelligence in Physiology Education & Research, grant writing insights for physiology research by senior scientists from SERB and ICMR, and a special session on military physiology, exploring potential collaborations between AIIMS and DRDO in this field.

Discussions were held in the different aspects of military physiology such as underwater, heat, high-altitude, hypoxic stress, physiology to be integrated in regular research activities in all physiology departments of different AIIMS to be upgraded.

The workshop aimed at bringing together the best minds in Physiology to synergize efforts and promote collaborative research. It is anticipated that such initiatives by Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS will pave the way for more honours to the country in the field of Physiology and Medicine.
