.World Population Day is an annual event observed every year on the 11th of July to spread awareness about the increasing population and its impact on society, nations and environment. The day came into existence when the world population reached 500 crores in 1987, intending to address the public interest and educate the people about the population issues like benefits of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, human rights, etc
On this occasion Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar organized an interactive session on the theme of “Rising World Population and the effect on our Natural Resources” by Shri Bansidhar Mohapatra, ISS, Retd. Asst. Director, National Sample Survey of India, Bhubaneswar. During the session Shri Mohapatra presented his views about the relevance of the day and the challenges like food scarcity, adverse effect of increasing population on the environment, natural resources and he also talked about the possible solutions to deal with. This was followed by an Open House Quiz Competition; where about more than 120 participants took part in an interactive manner. The event ended with a debate on the topic “The population explosion is a boon or bane.” Keeping in mind the greater interest of the students’ community, Regional Science Centre, Bhubaneswar will continue to organise such events in days to come.
