Bhubaneswar, December 23, 2024: The Department of Agriculture and Farmer’s Empowerment (DAFE), Government of Odisha in collaboration with The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the CGIAR Initiative on National Policies and Strategies (NPS) completed three batches of a two-days state-level training program for farmer producer organizations (FPOs) at State Institute of Training and Extension (SITE), Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
FPOs are increasingly recognized as instrumental in addressing various challenges the agriculture sector faces. FPOs have played a role in improving farmers’ livelihoods, facilitating market access, and fostering innovation, many FPOs face challenges such as short life cycles, misaligned incentives, and structural inefficiencies that limit their long-term effectiveness and sustainability.
The training started on December 12, 2024, and was conducted in three batches (December 12–13, 14–15, and 22–23), covering more than 120 participants from 30 districts; 40% of each batch were women. Dr. Devesh Roy, Dr. Mamata Pradhan, Sunil Saroj, Amit Burman, Devendra Kumar & Vandana Vidhani from IFRPI facilitated the training.
The training programs aimed to equip FPOs with the knowledge to overcome the challenges by focusing on factors like Organizational design & optimal size, Value chain & marketing channels, Branding & certification, and Financial management.
Dr. Devesh Roy, Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI, highlighted that “FPOs in Odisha should draw inspiration from ASEAN countries and function like entrepreneurial entities, it is important that they strategically hire and assign activities to each member based on their skillsets and focus on optimal size.”
The training ended with the interaction of participants with Sri Subharashu Mishra, Additional Secretary, DAFE, and Dr. Sangram Keshari Pattanaik, Deputy Director, DAFE Dr. Nagendra Malik, Sri. Purna Charan Shaw, Principal Secretary, SITE, and Dr. Mamata Pradhan, Research Coordinator, IFPRI heard and noted the problems of FPO members and ensured continuous post-training support from the department.
