China 26/10/23:India created history at the Asian Para Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China on Thursday, by achieving their best-ever medal haul. Nithya Sre Sivan’s securing bronze in the badminton women’s singles SH6 helped India touch the historic medal tally of 73 medals. The country’s previous best was 72 medals which they had achieved in Indonesia in 2018.
Also, with Sachin Sarjerao Khilari winning the gold in the men’s shot put F46 event, India broke their record for most gold medals in a single edition of an Asian Para Games. They have won 16 gold medals so far in Hangzhou, surpassing the previous best of 15 in 2018.
India has sent 313 athletes for the Asian Para Games in China which is the most in any edition for the country and they are taking part in 18 out of 22 sports. A total of 556 gold-medal events will take place.
The first Para Asian Games took place in 2010 in Guangzhou, China, and India finished 15th in that edition with 14 medals, including one gold.
In the 2014 and 2018 editions, India finished 15th and ninth respectively.
